On March 28, 2025, at approximately 12:51 PM, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale struck with its epicenter located about 21 kilometers northeast of the Mandalay Seismic Station, or roughly 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay city, at a depth of 10 kilometers (latitude 22.09° North, longitude 96.23° East). As a result, on May 7, 2025, search and rescue members from the Fire Services Department were reported to be carrying out clearance and recovery operations in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay Region, which were affected by the earthquake's destruction and damage.
